I have been doing remodeling for roughly 35 years. I started working with my Grandfather as an adolescent. My maternal Grandparents were both Realtors, so there were always houses needing work done. Grandpa let me ride around with him when he went to fix various things on his properties—so I started out as his gopher. We divided time between working on real estate properties in San Antonio and personal properties the Texas Hill Country. I had to earn the right to use any tool, by proving I had learned what he’d shown me. Scrap wood was never wasted, so I had to learn fast and accurately. When Grandpa retired, he settled down to woodworking in his shop. I’ve digressed from what I wanted to tell you...
My Dad’s parents owned a hardware store in Missouri. (This was in the days before The Home Depot and Lowe’s redefined the industry.) I spent a month every summer helping in the store. I learned a lot about tools, working with the public, and generally getting to know people. It was as close as I’ve ever seen to a Norman Rockwell painting. Red brick Main Street, Moore’s Ace Hardware, across from the Woolworth’s and the Barber Shop, right next door to the Rexall Drug store and soda fountain. (There’s something you can’t find at The Home Depot.) The store’s gone now; along with the Barbershop, the Drug store and the Woolworth’s. But I’ve digressed again…
Between learning all about tools from one side of my family, and learning how to use them from the other side, you could say that building things and repairing stuff became what I defined as normal activities. It also became what I love to do. I have tools left to me by both Grandfather’s and one of my Great-Grandfather’s. Some of them I still use. Continuity.
Over time, I have come to understand that people have a wide variety of aesthetic preferences. My appreciation continues to grow for the many new styles that become popular. And yet, I think there are some older styles that can not be improved upon.
Remodeling is all about finding what works for you. Make the most of your space, redesign your accommodations, add a wall or subtract one, out with the old, in with new: light fixtures, texture, even add a coat of paint (with or without special effects). Express yourself, or just get it ready to sell. I would really enjoy helping you figure out what you’d like done.
I’ll do my level best to get it done just the way you want it!
